I usually record an idea for a painting soon after seeing it with small drawings. I sometimes re-do the drawing a number of times or alter it slightly. This is usually to get a feel for what i have, literally, in mind as the painting, whilst taking into account a more realistic recollection of what I'd saw.

There is a kind of dual purpose going on at this point: what i want to see as a painting and what i feel truly depicts or describes the image i saw. The character of the drawings, the veering lines and quirks and are taken forward onto canvas, or sometimes exaggerated to accommodate the size or shape of the canvas.

Once the 'cartoon' is put onto canvas the drawing becomes obsolete. Textures, materials, colours, and paint stuff take the piece to completion but the drawings are the crucial starting point.
